Donald P. Speakman is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he resides with his wife, Jamie. He has three children and five grandchildren.

One indication of Don’s personal commitment to provide his clients with the very best in financial planning is the extensive list of designations he has earned. He has also earned the respect of his peers through the many financial planning conferences he has addressed, both nationally and internationally.

For over 30 years Don has been designing financial plans with unique investment strategies for his clients.  His experience lies in conceiving and designing programs for lump sum distributions from corporate retirement and 401(K) plans, with particular emphasis on creative approaches to income tax savings. He attributes his outstanding success to understanding his client’s needs and developing carefully constructed financial plans, which meet their “comfort level.”  He is a firm believer that “good communications” is the key to creating a successful retirement plan.

Don served on the Board of Directors for the Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, Inc. for over 20 years. For the past 6 years he has served on the Board of Directors for the Pregnancy Resource Center of the South Hills.  Because of his proactive community involvement, he has been able “To have a positive influence on as many people’s lives as possible.”  By living and believing this statement, Don has found “true success” within his lifetime.

As a registered representative, Charlene is passionate about assisting women and men who find themselves overwhelmed and confused about matters affecting their personal finances.  Her life experiences of going through a divorce, single parenting, care giving to parents, re-marrying and blending families, allows her to empathize and guide others whose life-journey is taking them through similar experiences.  Financial wellness and personal wellness are blended in her approach to guiding clients by focusing on what they can control, and accepting what they can not control.  “I find it so uplifting to empower my clients who may be feeling de-railed or are lacking confidence.  At one time or another we all need a little guidance or perspective to get back on track or stay on track!  I try to provide that.”  

A graduate of Robert Morris University, Charlene has worked in the life insurance and investment industry for more than 20 years and has been a member of our team since 2002.  She has a solid background in life insurance, annuities, mutual funds and long term care products.  She also attained the Certified Funds Specialist (CFS) designation from the Institute of Business and Finance.  Outside of the office she enjoys spending time with her daughter, Erica, and granddaughter, Riley.   An avid theater-goer, she also finds “therapy” in crafting, singing in her church choir, and traveling with her husband, John, on motorcycle adventures!  

 

 

David Speakman, Office Manager

David joined Don’s team in 1997 as an administrative assistant under the supervision of his late father, Walter Speakman.  At present he is the office manager and enjoys the variety of learning opportunities this position offers. 

David graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 1972 with a Bachelors degree in Education.  For the following 25 years he worked in the food service industry in several management positions including Nationwide and Xerox in Columbus, Ohio, Encyclopedia Britannica and Bodine Electric in Chicago, Illinois.  One of his most challenging yet rewarding positions was Food Service Director at the Kellogg Company in Battle Creek Michigan. 

David, a widower has two adult sons and five grandchildren.  The recreational activities David enjoys most include motorcycle riding, pool, outdoor activities and spectator sports.  His favorite teams are the Penguins and of course the Steelers!            

 

 

Judy M. Elias, Appointment Coordinator/Administrative Assistant

Judy joined the Speakman Group in February 2000, bringing 21 years of customer service experience in the financial industry. She is responsible for scheduling Don’s and Charlene's appointments.  She also assists in coordinating special seminars, golf outings and special events.

She is the mother of three children and the proud grandmother of six grandchildren. Judy enjoys spending time with her family, dancing and listening to music.

 

 

Katie Bichler, Administrative Assistant

Katie Bichler joined The Speakman Financial Group as an Administrative Assistant in January 2004.  She earned her Associate’s degree in Business at Community College and her Bachelor degree in Finance at Robert Morris University.  She has also obtained her Life, Series 6 and Series 63 licensing.

She assists Don by providing detailed information needed to make recommendations and processing financial transactions after appointments.  Her main responsibilities are interfacing with clients with regard to explaining contract details and completing all necessary forms.

On May 30, 2010 Katie and her husband, Steve, were delighted to announce the birth of their first child, Logan Bichler.  She enjoys physical activities including working out at the gym, running and skiing.

 


Paul Speakman, Client Relations, Information Technologist

Paul had been in the financial services business for several years and in 1995 he decided to take Don up on the opportunity to join his team.  When someone refers, or “turns in” a friend to the group, it’s his job to give them a call, get to know them, answer questions, and look into the possibilities of having them come to an evening seminar or coordinate a face to face meeting with Charlene or Don.

He is also the Information Technology Specialist member of the team.  Paul troubleshoots day to day computer hardware and software issues, as well as major server and database conversions.  His goal is to keep SFG running smoothly.

Paul's son Eric is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and is currently working for the Allegheny County Medical Examiner. His daughter Kasey graduated from Penn State University at Behrend in Erie with a degree in accounting and is currently employed by Price Waterhouse in downtown Pittsburgh.  Paul and his fiancee Deborah Yarmeak enjoy traveling in their new motor homethe great outdoors and spending time with his children.

 


Mary Ann Hawk,  Receptionist/Administrative Assistant

Mary Ann joined Don’s team on a part-time basis in June of 2004 and came on board full time in late December of the same year.  Her main responsibilities are greeting clients and handling incoming telephone calls, but also enjoys playing back-up to the other team players.  She has many years of experience in the financial field as an administrative assistant, and has held numerous interesting posts during her long and varied career. 

Mary Ann enjoys traveling, and is an avid cook (and food shopper!)  She also enjoys spending time with her husband, Ed, and 2 grown children.

Colleen brings over 15 years experience of administrative and computer skills.  She assists in client information, arranging seminars, client events and the daily office routine.

Colleen has served on the board of numerous community organizations.  She loves sports of all kinds both as a spectator & participant.  She mostly enjoys spending time with her family, husband Scott, her grown children Tyler, married daughter Kayla and Brodie Warren.

The Speakman Financial Group would like to introduce you to and welcome the newest member of our team, Paula Abramovitz.  She joins us with 7 years of experience in the financial services industry and holds a California State Insurance License for Life & Health.  Paula will be taking over for Ronnee and her primary role will be preparing client summaries and balance sheets for client meetings.

Paula was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended the University of Pittsburgh.  After spending 6 years in Los Angeles, California, she and her husband have decided to return home to start a family - they are expecting a baby in December!  In her free time, Paula enjoys listening to live music, attending sporting events, traveling and baking.
